Flanders 24 Picardy 10 France gen. 23 Northumbr. 5 Anglo-Saxon etc. 89 Unknown 244 (Known 519) Total 763 It appears that the origins of 2/3 of the Domesday Book holders are known. Of course there is a certain amount of hypothesis in attributing origins to some of the vassals (whose origin is not specified in the available texts). Those ‘unknown’ are largely king’s servants or those associated as servants with nobles. Their origin was not considered as important as their function in the lord’s household. As might be expected, the greatest majority came from places close to the English channel and less from places further away. But a surprising number of adherents of William I came from rather far away – e.g. from Anjou or Douai. Also, it is significant that it was not only the ‘Norman’ coast which provided adherents but also the Breton and Flemish coasts, so that supporters were to be found all the way from Ille-et-Villaine (Brittany) on the west to Bethune in eastern France (450 km. distance along the north flank of France). Certain leaders had large followers such as: the king himself, his wife’s people i.e. Counts of Boulogne, Flanders, Guines etc.; the Count of Brittany / Richmond; the king’s two half-brothers Odo bishop of Bayeux and Count Robert of Mortain; families such as Douai or de Moyon as well as Warenne; one believes also that many under Baldwin the sheriff of Devon (de Clare / Meules family) were probably de Clare followers. Other important families such as de Montgomery, Grandmesnil, de Beaumont, Fitzherfast, Neufmarché, de Tosny, Giffard-Bolbec etc. certainly brought a large following with them. Families from the Calvados coast were relatively important after the Conquest, viz de Port-en-Bessin, de Ryse, Fitzhamon etc or even de Colombières, or de Buci. A most significant personality was the Earl of Chester, Hugh d’Avranches. He brought many followers from his region and gave them posts in Cheshire- his semi-independent realm. Roger de Poitou (de Montgomery) had a similar realm of influence in west Yorks. and Lancs, and his family was highly significant in Sussex and Salop (Earls of Shrewsbury). The de Ferrières family soon became the significant family of Derbyshire and part of Staffs., whereas the de Tosny family in the person of ‘Robert of Stafford’ was dominant in Warwicks. and Staffs. The Welsh border counties of Shropshire, Worcs,. and Herefordshire were dominated by the de Lacy, Fitzpons, Montgomery and Mortemer families whereas Bigod and Valognes as well as de Vere, de Clare and Warenne dominated East Anglia. The significant counties of Cambs., Bucks., Herts. and Beds. were largely under such families as Giffard-Bolbec, the Counts of Boulogne and the Count of Richmond. Many noble families had holdings in Lincolnshire with a significant presence of the bishops and of the Gand / Ghent family. The Neufmarché family held widely in the south and in the West Counties. De Lacy held widely in Yorkshire. CLERICS These are not categorised according to origin. See document entitled MAURICE for a summary of information about many of them.
